Engine is a mechanical machine that convert fuel chemical energy in to mechanical energy.Some machine needs mechanical energy to do work.Pumps and compressors can be driven by the mechanical energy supplied  by internal combustion engines.This mechanical energy of internal combustion engine is converted electrical energy with alternator.

All internal combustion engines burn fuel inside a cylinder to produce power.Internal combustion engines are classified according to the way of fuel and ignition.According to ignition internal combustion engines have two types.

1. Compression ignition engine.
2. Spark ignition engine.

Compression ignition Engine.

Compression ignition engines work on diesel cycle.Compression ignition engines are diesel engines or (HFO) heavy furnace oil engines.In compression ignition engines do not need a spark to ignite the charge.Compression ignition engines compress air inside the cylinder to very high pressure.fuel is pumped with engine driven pump and pressurized fuel is send to injector.Then fuel injector spray this fuel in cylinder compressed air.Compression ignition engines uses the heat of compression to ignite the fuel and not needs ignition system.

 Spark Ignition Engine.

Spark ignition engines work on auto cycle.Spark ignition engines are petrol or gas engines.In spark ignition engines 24 volt dc supply ignition module send voltage pulse to ignition transformer.The ignition transformer increase the voltage which create a spark across the spark plug electrode.
